Sonia Rykiel was born in 1930. She is a French fashion designer who started out as a window dresser, but found more opportunities to join the sworld of fashion when she married Sam Rykiel, the owner of a fashion boutique. Rykiel’s signature fashion design is the pullover sweater. While she sold her first creations in her husband’s boutique, she opened her own boutique with her name in it in 1968. In 1970, she was called by the fashion journal Women’s Wear Daily as the “Queen of Knits.”
Rykiel admitted that her designs are the opposite of fashion, especially because they are knit wears. She has already done a lot of things with this type of wear, including creating loose knits, putting external seams, making sweaters without hems, designing very short and very long sweaters, and making sweaters with knitted words on them. Through her designs, Rykiel encouraged women to show their individuality through their fashion choices instead of simply following the trend.
In 1979, Rykiel’s first perfume was launched. It was called Septieme Sense and was directed by Rykiel’s daughter, Nathalie. The fragrance division of the company further included L’Eau De Sonia Rykiel, Le Parfum, and Rykiel Homme.
